Today in the news

Sigh...... Hope it doesn't apply to bikers.

WANT to drive to Malaysia?
You may soon have to pay an entry fee of RM20 ($8.70).

No announcements have yet been made about when this fee will be implemented.

New Straits Times reported that the Immigration Department of Malaysia has already installed special gantries and electronic payment card readers at the Causeway and Second Link.

The devices are functional and can be activated any time.

Malaysian Minister of Tourism Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansur (right) said at a press conference yesterday that implementing an entry fee to Malaysia for Singaporeans shouldn't in any way dampen their holiday mood.

He said that Singaporeans would 'slowly get used to' the idea of having to pay an entrance fee to Malaysia, reported Lianhe Zaobao.

He added that because of the Malaysian government's subsidies, the price of petrol and other necessities are considerably lower. (So are the quality of some of these items!!!)

When Singaporeans drive to Malaysia to shop, they also benefit from these lower prices.

He added: 'So they really shouldn't begrudge having to pay a small fee.'

He also pointed out that Malaysian cars entering Singapore must also pay $20 when they cross the border.

No fees are levied on weekends and public holidays.

'This is not a small sum when you convert it to ringgit, and you don't hear Malaysian drivers complaining about it,' he said.

Last April, The Straits Times reported that foreign motorists entering Malaysia from Thailand or Singapore would likely have to pay a RM20 fuel levy for entering the country, regardless of the number of days they remain there.

But Tengku Adnan said last year that he does not expect the introduction of an entry fee to affect visitor numbers from Thailand and Singapore.

Some 9 million Singaporean tourists are expected to have visited Malaysia last year, and it is gunning for 10 million Singaporean visitors this year with a RM200 million promotional budget.

Malaysian Deputy Home Affairs Minister Tan Chai Ho said last year that the mechanics of the fee system were still being worked out.

But to prevent traffic congestion for cars entering Malaysia, the fee would be charged when cars exited Malaysia instead of when they entered.

He added that the fee would likely be collected via a prepaid card which would be available at petrol stations and convenience shops.

'The use of a prepaid card would help prevent long queues,' he said. (Right.... So where do we top up?? So it's juz moving / adding another queue to somewhere else??)

16 handicapped bikers caught for daredevil stunts

THEIR death-defying motorcycle stunts landed them in the soup.

Sixteen bike-stunt hobbyists were stopped by the police from practising their tricks on Sunday in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

But to the police's surprise, they were no ordinary drivers.

All were disabled.

Among them was a youth who had deformities in his hands and also could not walk properly. He was performing a bike stunt when the police caught him.

When in custody, police found that the youth's fingers were abnormal - they were much shorter than usual. He also had a limp.

No details were given on the other suspects' disabilities.

ELSEWHERE IN KL...

A motorist who was robbed of his waistpouch by two fake policemen decided to get even.

Not only did he give chase in his car - he decided to run them over.

He had stopped his car by the roadside to make a call at 3.15am last Sunday when two robbers approached him, reported Sin Chew Daily.

They asked him to hand over his waistpouch and handphone, and he obeyed.

But he wasn't about to give up without a fight.

As the two robbers fled on a motorcycle, he got back in his car, gave chase and knocked them down. One of the robbers, who was riding pillion, fell off the motorcycle and was pinned under the car. The other fled with the waistpouch.

When the police arrived, the remaining 22-year-old robber had been seriously injured and was taken to hospital.

He died two hours later.

Sometimes car drivers also try to do that if you over take them.

:D

Riding Safety Part 1

Was hoping to start this series on riding safety that I have experienced for quite some time back but never really had the chance...

One of the biggest excuses that I have heard car drivers use / say whenever they were involved in a car accident / close to one say... "I did not see that bike".

Well I say, if you did not see them, we make sure they hear us.

Most if not all bikes are fitted with disk type of horns that sometimes give about 50dbs.
Stock
Quite miserable considering that now a dayz cars are so well sound proofed, these car drivers prob cannot hear them too.

Esp when they "pump" up the volume of their stereo...
:D
Soluna

Qn, When a car looks like it's on a collision course with a biker (Coz he / she did not bother to check his / her blind spot), should the biker

Here's what I would do... (I am not suggesting for anyone to do this but this is juz my thoughts...)

Avoid him / her and HONK!!! Honk to make sure that he / she knows what he / she has almost caused.

Some people may say... almost only mah... But what if it happens?? A real collision?
Another case of... "Oh sorry I did not see you coming?"
I "seen" too many accidents of this sort...

I guess there are many ways to honk as well...

The short 1/10 sec honk as a very gentle reminder.
The 1/2 honk as an OOiiii...
The 1 Sec wake up your idea....
The Non stop Honk... xxxxxxxxxxxx.......

I would do a 1 Sec honk to make sure that the driver knows what is going on and what he / she almost caused.

Anyway, to most, if not all my biker friends, I would advise this "so far" still legal modification... changing to an
Electrical HORN, some people juz calls them air horn.
Newfilters

According to the specs... http://www.fiammamerica.com/Product.asp?ProductID=167
These are 130bd @ 4".
Give & take, it's about 90-100bd @ about 1m still.
Still very loud. (Even though my Church's Service that I am on duty maxed @ 115bd once.)
:D
How loud is that?? It's about the sound of a concord taking off.

These babies run connected to a relay which would not affect the battery juice of your bike.

But these Air Horns... (Wished I could install them)
Air
But they would suck too much juice from the batt and may damage them... sigh...

Anyway...

Be heard, dun be afraid to use your horns... But of course, dun be malicious about it
:)
Stay safe, ride safe.

Rainy dayz...

It's been a real nightmare over the last couple of weeks esp for bikers.

The first couple of weeks in Dec was the worst. Rain that lasted for dayz.

Even my granny's place in Keluang was flooded.
My granny's place is about 5ft elevated from the road and the water totally covered the main roads and nearly seeped into the house.

Everyone thought that the worse was over...
Coz after that... Some papers mentioned that "some authorities" said that good weather was coming...

But last week, the flood came back & this time, it was another 2ft higher. The authorities had to use boats to send food / rations. Sigh.

Then these papers then said... Looks like we are in for more bad weather... again...

But it's been quite sunny over the last couple of dayz.
Sometimes I think I'd rather trust my own instincts when it comes to the weather.
:D

Anyway, on my way there the previous week, the NSHW aka North South Highway had plenty of pot holes... varying in sizes & depts. But what surprised me was that many / most of them were mended. The road from the 2nd link to Air Hitam exit was about 70-80km. But the unmended pot holes were quite.... minimal / little...

Where as some of the roads in SG... sometime really dunno what to say... There is this relatively big & deep pot hole on the Upper Serangoon / Tampinese Road turning into the TPE... It's been there for the last 2 weeks & still no repairs.
Sigh...

Also something that I noted... Over the last couple of dayz when the roads were wet most of the time... esp roads that are less used... became slippery... really slippery.
When I took a closer look, there seems to be a slightly slimy substance on the surface of the road... In the tarmac... believe it or not... Moss were starting to form.

Did it really rain THAT much??

Anyway, to those who is riding... be extra careful esp when the road starts to get wet again.

Talking about slippery... Now a dayz... fly overs are a common thing...
Towards my place, there is this Seng Kang flyover towards Punggol... Over TPE.
These flyovers used to have gaps for allowance for expansions & contractions. In the past, these holes were filled with a black substance which may be tar... But now a dayz... the authorities uses some steel joints that zigs zags like monster's teeth.
Anyway, these things are about 10" wide... & they are super slippery!!!

The darnest thing about it is that these are usually @ the start & @ the end of the flyovers... But then... That is where they have traffic lights to allow vehicles to turn as well...

Well to provide a better pict... Bikes have 2 wheels... duh...
When either wheel loses "grip" on the road... Unlike cars... they skid & fall.

Ok... going back... If anyone on a rainy day was riding a bike with cold tyres made of hard compound taking a corner there @ 30-40km/h... which is a decent speed... will have a very high chance to.... Kiss the tarmac.

As I need to travel on that road @ least once a week... And my bike's tyres are hard compound & cold when I get there... Well what I would do is... make a really really slow & wide turn. As I will stay upright as I pass the metal piece, then start to turn.

Then pick up like hell...

As I alwayz tell my friends.... Ride safe.
